I replied to this question, this morning. Let me further qualify what I
posted with some experience.

My first KR started with an 1835 Gilbert Duty conversion. It had the oil
cooler on top, in the exact same location where all the GPASC VW engines
have theirs. I later converted that same engine to a 1915. I flew that
plane and those engines for a total of 185 hours. The plane was then
purchased and continued to fly until it was damaged. This KR has 1 hour on
it and is a GPASC 2180 VW. Both engines have a remote oil filter.

I NEVER saw oil temperatures that were even close to being out of range on
any of those 3 installations, NEVER. Do your baffling correctly. You do
not need any special exhaust ducting for the oil cooler when mounted in this
manner. Come to the gathering this year and look at all the VW engines that
are there and I bet that you will find that most, if not all, of them have
the oil cooler mounted in the same place.

There is a time for building and a time for FLYING and the time for Flying
has begun.
