I have an avionics expert buddy who reminded me that turning on a transponder with no antenna connected can fry the thing in a matter of seconds. 250 watts with no where to go, or something like that. I suspect he knows what he's talking about, so keep that in mind when installing a transponder and wanting to check to see if it lights up before you install the antenna.
