Netters;
I think the issue of tri-gear vs conventional is a great subject for the
KR Net. A lot of readers may be at the point in their build where they have to
make a decision on which type of gear to install. And therefore, there is
plenty of room for more comment. Now it is time for me to add my 2 cents.
There are a few reasons you don't see nearly as many conventional gear
aircraft sitting on the ramp of modern airports. For the most part, modern
manufacturers don't build conventional gear aircraft anymore. It's quite
simple: the design is inherently less safe than tricyle gear aircraft. And of
course, the statistics regarding aircraft accidents are what drive the
insurance companies. And the insurance companies have a huge effect on where
aviation is heading.
Also, a big percentage of conventional gear aircraft that are still part
of the general aviation fleet have moved "North to Alaska", where there is a
need for aircraft with greater prop clearance. And that is where I observed 3
landing accidents, (a Cessna 185, a Dehaviland Beaver, and a Piper SuperCub),
last summer at Talkeetna Airport. 2 of the 3 accidents involved high-time,
professional pilots. And two of the airplanes involved, the 185 and the
Beaver, are both easier to land than a KR-2 with conventional gear. Therefore,
if you are a low-time pilot who wants to improve your chances of keeping your
accident record clean and your shiny new KR in one piece...install tricycle
landing gear.
