Hey Guys,I have become a non-pilot pilot. Between Thanks Giving and Christmas
I installed the servos from Dynon that slave to the D10A to finish the
Autopilot function. Installation was pretty straight forward and became
somewhat typical of many of their installations already because I have the daul
sticks that are pushpull in both axis and change to cable at a bellcrank. I had
room under the seat for the servos so they are very close to the existing CG.
Wiring was simple as was the set up and down loads of the firmware. I had an
issue with the remote compass going bad and that has now been replaced. Of the
past 20 hours or so flown i have touched the stick for about 20 percent of the
time. From some point in the climb i can start the navigation on course and
then set the altitude i want and she climbs at the preset rate of 400ft/min She
rounds out at altitude and I adjust throttle amd mixture. The AP flyes way
better than i can. It holds altitude withinn 10 feet in calm air and less than
50 in some of the roughest air. The navigation setting keeps the plane dead on
course no matter what the wind and if just flying the heading or track (heading
corrected for wind angle) it is as easy as a button push to adjust the heading
to where you want to go. The KR controls are so light to begin with that the
servos never get hot even though they are working constantly. If it thinks the
servos are working more than they should a little yellow warning flag pops up
on screen telling me to retrim and which way. With a destination in the GPS the
GPS says when to start decent and i set the pattern altitude and i arrive at
the airport at the correct altitude. Then it lets me have the stick again to
get us on the ground. The one function that i love is the 180 button. By
pushing one button the plane does a 180 degree turn to the left and holds
altitude while taking you right back where you came from (hopefully into VFR)
This can be done anytime even if you are not flying by AP at the time. But it
is fun just to do it in clear air. I have flown a a couple pretty rough days
with it in AP flight and still would not like the KR in IMC even witht the AP.
Many times it is pretty dang rough in the clouds and it just can not keep up
with sever turbulance. Other than fun the up side is I look for traffic more,
with a lot more freetime to look around and enjoy the ride. Circling to
photograph is pretty easy now by just setting altitude hold and putting th KR
and to a bank. i can get nearly 2 circles out of it in calm air before having
to correct the bank or my flight path.Joe Horton,Coopersburg, Pa
