Although some epoxies are different, I believe the instructions for the most commonly used T-88 are to NOT make an effort to squeeze the joint tightly, as much of the epoxy will be squeezed out leaving a weaker joint. Back when I built N56ML I would often just slide the gussets in place with plenty of T-88 on the joint and let it cure. That way the T-88 has a chance to absorb deeper into the wood grain and yielding a stronger joint. That's not to say if you've built it with super tight joints that it won't work, however...it's still pretty strong! Just some light pressure to keep the parts in contact while the wood cures is really all you need though. I used 5/16" staples and found them quite sufficient, for what it's worth. T-88 sure does hold them in quite well though, and some folks have waxed their staples before using them. Somebody else will argue that could be a problem later when painting, but not if you keep that kind of thing in mind when prepping for paint...
