Hi Buzz If the cracks are perpendicular to the grain they are not drying cracks, these would be parallel to the grain. They are more likely to be stress compression cracks, caused either by over stressing of the member or the wrong species of timber being used. My advice, walk away.....

I am looking at a 2S project and noticed the spar caps on both wings and the stub spar have checking cracks. That is, cracks normally due to drying. The cracks are perpendicular to the grain. Any thoughts, ideas or advice? I have not looked the log yet and do not know what wood was used. Thanks for your input.
