It's been my understanding you should paint the exhaust WHITE or light color to keep the heat inside the pipes instead of painting them black and radiating the heat outward. I've also used the heat wrap tape which I didn't feel kept the heat from radiating. This stuff looked like "fiberglass tape" but I'm sure it was some type of asbestos.
Wicks used to sell a product that was guaranteed to reflect/trap heat inside the exhaust. It was expensive but the space industry was the ones who developed it. They were solid panels from what I remember. Maybe someone knows what this was called? The temp gauge moved a lot faster without the normal lag. I guess that is because you are insulating the exhaust gas you are measuring from the outside air that is cooling it.
