Sorry, bad idea.

I have attended both regularly for several years with my KR, so I think I am
qualified to comment.

OSH is really not a good venue for a KR Gathering. Flying in/out is a challenge
many KR pilots don't want to tackle it. That is partly why so few show up
there. And don't think about giving rides, its painful to get in and out of the
airspace.

Yes, the location should change and move around the country. I flew to the one
in California a couple years ago. I believe we all agree to that - but that is
where "You" need to offer to host it at your airport. Don't just put it off on
others and complain about the results.

Sounds like Ken Hurley might be considering hosting a future one? Outstanding!
Thank you!

Rob Schmitt

Subject: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

Disclaimer: I have not attended a KR Gathering and I’m sure I’d love it if I
did.

For the last few years I have been lamenting the decline of "Experimental
Aviation" at AirVenture. It feels like experimental and homebuilt have become
less than a sideshow at OSH - perhaps just an afterthought. I wouldn’t
complain if it was just that everything else aviation was growing at AirVenture
- which is great. However, it seems that the number and especially the variety
of “experimental” aircraft has been declining. (The situation is even worse
if you admit that RV’s are not experimental.)

We have to admit that we are the problem.

We, and other experimental type clubs, have abandoned Oshkosh.

AirVenture is crowded and difficult - especially to fun fly during the event.
But it is also a central unifying event at which a number of type clubs have
significant, important, and useful gatherings. Further,
fun/instructional/demonstration flying is not just possible but encouraged
every morning and evening. There is nothing we could do at the KR Gatherings
that couldn’t be done better at OSH.

I suggest we have the KR Gatherings at AirVenture from 2018 on.

Some will argue that we can have both - but that’s not practical for most of us.

I’m guessing that like 90% of the members of this group, while we would love to
attend a KR Gathering the costs in time and $ can not be justified in light of
the many other things in our lives. Most anyone working or on a budget will
have to pick one or the other, at best.

However, if the KR Gathering is at AirVenture many more of our members
could/would attend.

If the KR Gathering is at AirVenture, we could more easily draw on outside
expertise such as talks to us and hands on support by William Wynne (Corvair),
Scott Casler (VW), etc. If the KR Gathering is at AirVenture, attendees could
learn from the unparalleled gathering of resources and vendors gathered at OSH.

Importantly, we can expose many more to the attractions of KR aircraft rather
than just preaching to the same hard core choir.

The only supportable argument I can imagine for KR Gatherings separate from
OSH, is that many can’t make the 1,300 mile trip to OSH from one coast or the
other. And that argument is completely nullified by having the KR Gatherings in
the mid-west every year or every other year.

So please, lets have the KR Gatherings at OSH - the advantages are huge, the
disadvantages are addressable.

If not, then at least lets move them around the country.

Cheers,
Owen Hughes
