Did someone mention metal debris sensors? A lubriclone with an easy to inspect 
collector will do. A magnet before the oil filter might work as well as long as 
it can be easily inspected without draining the oil. Better still, an in-line 
metal debris sensor will warn you of trouble before it becomes critical. 

And it would be great if your smartphone can stream your data to a central 
database.
