I'm a bit skeptical that a dual flat screen system with add-ons would
weight more than all the round gauges and associated items they replace
and reduce the useful load of a C182 by a 170 pound passenger. I tried
looking all over the internet and could not find the installed weight
anywhere. I did find it interesting that the manual is 600+ pages long
and the Pilot Cockpit reference manual is like 190 pages long. I don't
think I even have a manual for my round gauges. I'm not saying flat
screens are not amazing technology and have no place in the cockpit,
They're just not for me. I installed, programmed, and calibrated a dual
Skyview in a friends RV10. It's like someone said, "it's like flying
the panel instead of the airplane". When I ride with him I spend more
time looking at the flat screen than looking out the window.
Sounds like someone lost some lead in the baggage compartment of your
C182. I've spent time in an old early model 182 hauling 5 bodies (4
jumpers + me at 200 lbs) to 10K on a 95 degree day with the weight of 5
parachutes. It was scratching for the last 2000 feet but it did it time
after time. I'm amazed your bird is so heavy that it is a 2 passenger
airplane, even at 4500 MSL. My impression was the 182 could haul my
pickup truck if i could fit it in the cockpit. It even flew nice with
two or three bodies hanging out the right side, standing on the wheel
stand and hanging on the strut. Awesome airplane.
