Mike,

I pull the power back at pattern altitude and never go above 2500 rpm for the rest of the flight but my #1 cylinder plugs always look darker when I pull them.  Airplanes are like people, everyone different I guess.  I'm wondering if a very, very fine stainless steal mesh with say, 1/4" squares in the induction path, just above the carb, mounted between two gaskets, would work.  A round shape creates a great deal of turbulence in a slipstream.  Just wondering............
