Here's how I did mine on the KR2....full width of the flat bottom of the fuselage, and 9.5" tall (nose draggers could probably stand more). The creation and installation was really pretty quick. See http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/speedbrake/ for excruciating details.

My experience with this is that it noses the plane down, likely because it's a drag point at the bottom of the plane, but it's never been noticeable enough for me to readjust trim in any way....seems to not affect trim much, for some reason. I'll have to pay more attention to that next time I fly. Of course the huge bonus is that it's like riding an elevator once you lower the board....a very noticeable rate of descent, and quicker slowdown rate, which translates into a lot less runway burned up in the process! You knew that already though.

As for holes, I looked into this a lot and the consensus is they made no real difference, so I left them off.....because when retracted those holes cause more drag, although the airflow is arguably quite turbulent being aft of the prop anyway....
