I know of a builder in Springfield, Ohio, that built his KR with
Douglas fir. EAA Sport Aviation printed the test methods for testing
the Douglas fir, I think, in the 70's. Being stronger than Sitka
Spruce, the 5/8 inch longerons, stringers, etc, can be cut to 9/16
inch, but I think he cut his to 5/8 inch anyway. I used Douglas fir
for an extra firewall crossmember, as I had to cut the lower one for
the retractable nose gear .

Oscar & I are building an iteration of the M-19 Flying Squirrel.
Wood, foam & glass VW power like the KR but STOL. I also ran into the
high cost or flat out unavailability of spruce.
The answer to your questions about alternate aircraft wood is found
in the NACA document on Aircraft Woods, Report 354 written by the
Forest Products Lab in 1930. I was having problems accessing the
source document from the NACA web site so I uploaded a copy to my web
site where you can pull a copy for your own research.

Bottom line, I'm using a combination of Douglas Fir and Western
Hemlock...

I've been looking at Wooden Aviation that sells select ash, and maybe
a good alternative
