I'm guessing you could pay a local avionics shop to check things out but
most builders simply do an "operational check" as in "breaker, breaker,
one nine. You got the long hauler here. Copy?"
A good setup should give you reception of 50+ miles and transmission of
no less then 25 miles. Anything less can be improved on. My simple
handheld gives me 50+ both ways with a good antenna.
