I got out my IFLY GPS and began looking at the new Oshkosh approach to
use for "extremely heavy traffic". The NOTAM indicates the starting
point will be announced by ATC in real time. You can however have the
entire route on your GPS with the magenta course line for the entire
route and then just fly to whatever entry point is announced.
They are using "visual reference points" already on the sectional. To
input the course simply input your flight plan from your last takeoff
point with the following waypoints:
Take off point
waypoint: VPENV (Endeavor Bridge)
waypoint: VPPLK (Puckaway Lake)
waypoint: VPGRN (Green Lake)
waypoint: VPRIP (Ripon)
waypoint: VPFIS (Fisk)
Landing; OSH
Once you arrive at Ripon you will be following ground references only so
the last two points are not used but you'll have them on the map anyway.
The NOTAM indicates lights on within 50 miles of Oshkosh. Also, leave
the transponder on throughout the approach. I think that is a change
from past years when they wanted the transponder off within a certain
distance. I'm guessing this has to do with ADS-B.
If you are set on flying to Airventure it doesn't hurt to start planning
the trip and getting familiar with the route. You can start reading the
NOTAM, even if not downloaded. I'm with Mark Langford on getting the
booklet mailed as it is much handier to use than 8.5X11 sheets of paper.
