Netters:  I couldn't find the video documenting the spar destructive test but
if someone has it please link it.

My South African friend John Reeder, (to whom some of these emails are sent)
has built two KR-2's, plus one of his own design, and is an aerobatic
instructor.

Seems like a flat-spin inpact that killed the occupants would likely have
been strong enough to damage/weaken the spar.

On one of my first flights to the Mt. Vernon, ILL yearly Gathering, someone had
brought a fully completed spar and some hydraulic jacks.  I don't remember how
the spar was anchored, but needless to say it was solidly fixed in place with
hydraulic jacks applying force to the other end.  It was a test to see just
where the weak point is on a KR spar.  There's a video of this somewhere on the
KRNET site (although I couldn't find it).  The outcome of this stress test was
the spar breaking, not the wing attach fittings.  I'll see if I can find the
data on this test and forward it to you for your interest.  Seems to me there
was some sort of instrumentation fitted to indicate just how many "G's" were
applied before the failure.

It was hardly laboratory conditions (such as you used in your garage test using
sand bags ) but the exercise was sufficient to prove the KR spar and attach
points were strong enough to handle extreme stress without failure.  I'll see
if I can find the data.

I agree , the attach points are the weakest points of an otherwise very strong
spar but the it was apparently built well with no sign of previous damage.Nevil
was used to the aggressive flying of the Extra and the problem with G’s is that
a quick jerk of the stick can induce a lot of G’s on the plane but the pilot
needs to experience G’s for a while to feel anything more than a bump.On a
brighter note, Russel has finished his Latest project, a KR1. He built it in
between building his Whisper’s, instructing, working and the thousand other
things he does. It’s exhausting trying to keep up with him. I’ll send a link

I recall the GK-1 was modeled on that plane that set the record from London
to RSA back in the 30's?  Wasn't that flight re-created by Chalkie Solbert?

Anyway, someone has posted a picture that supposedly shows the spar broken
underneath the seat.  Could it be, since that plane came down in a flat spin in
the original crash, that the spar was cracked when it hit on the first crash
and just wasn't noticed when the plane was restored?
Usually KR people are worried (if they're worried - most aren't) about failure
of the wing attach fittings.  I've never heard anyone express concern about the
spar itself breaking.  Supposedly the spar's are designed for +9 positive -
that's what is marked on my own plane's specs.  I think it's a -5 or -7
negative.  A spar that's been smashed hard enough to kill the passengers though
would seem suspect . . .  or maybe it was cracked and inadequately repaired.

Were these planes based at Tedderfield?

Yeah, knew Nevil well. He had an Extra and was doing well but I think hard
times forced him to sell and buy Garth Kopke’s GK1 (KR1 with Honda motor). He’s
been pushing it a bit hard. Borrowed Dickie’s KR and pulled the wings off doing

This is the first wing failure I've ever heard of.  I'm sure you are friends

Fatal accident...
(28/October/2021)
- South Africa 🇿🇦 :
A private Rand Robinson KR-2, registration ZS-UKU, impacted the terrain under
unknown circumstances in Tshwane, South Africa.
The sole pilot onboard was fatally injured.
Preliminary information says the aircraft suffered an inflight failure of one
of the wings.

-------------

This popped up on one of my aviation news feeds.  This plane has been lovingly
restored over the last 10 years.  Photos of the restoration can be located by
searching for Sakkie Halgreen’s – ZS-UKU restoration project.  It was
apparently running a Turbocharged 2.4Liter VW engine.  Photos of the completed
restoration from March are at the bottom of
<https://www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=79408&start=105>  The
best information I can find is that the aircraft is owned by Dickie Jacobs of
Pretoria, S.A.

Condolences to the pilots family.

Sad news.

DTSB Explains NTSB and Four More GA Crashes!

ZS-UKU crashed on the 28th October 2021 around midday near the Kitty Hawk
airfield where it was housed and the pilot Neville Ferriera was fatally
injured.

Preliminary feedback from people who were at the scene is that UKU appeared
to have lost part of a wing that was found about 800 meters away on the
flight path.  The aircraft went straight in at high speed and completely
demolished with no chance of survival.

Neville was an accomplished aerobatic pilot who often flew his own GK1 and
this KR2 owned by Dicky Jacobs.

Not much more is known at this stage.
