Same here, although I think I'm putting out more than 5 watts.  I know I've 
been able to talk to towers, other planes at distances of 100 miles or more . . 
. all from a tiny Icom A6 that was in the plane when I bought it.  Ken Cottle 
had put it in and had installed under the hat shelf a linear amplifier that was 
being sold for Experimental aircraft use.  It was being advertised back in 1987 
in one of the aviation trades but was taken off the market, I assume because 
the FCC complained.   With it's lighted keyboard and small size that fits my 
small cockpit, the A6 is a perfect fit.  I carry another Icom in a side pocket 
with an alkaline battery pack as back-up, but have never needed it.  The A6 has 
a headphone adapter for my Halos.
