Oddly enough, the behavior of the Delete key is reversed compared to using the mouse. Meaning its default behavior is to permanently delete. To send to trash, you'd have to use Ctrl-Del. You can change key bindings by going into the Settings menu and clicking on "Configure Shortcuts..."
