I have not done a bios upgrade, yet, but DID disable KMS by putting 'nomodeset' in grub2. I still get a flickering (and downward trending) change in brightness whenever I play a movie. I've repeated this with avi, flv, and mpg files and several different players including vlc. This may be separate bug, but I don;t think so.
