lightdm set this in its config to run the scripts before lightdm starts
 display-setup-script=/sbin/prime-offload
 display-stopped-script=/sbin/prime-switch
but rohan has pointed out to me this could be done as an upstart or systemd job 
and be mostly DM-independent.
