The SAIS-Novartis Prize
for Excellence in International Journalism
'97 Winners Announced!
In 1995, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International
Studies of The Johns Hopkins University established The
SAIS-Novartis Prize for Excellence in International
Journalism. Created to recognize outstanding achievement in
the coverage of international affairs, the prize is presented
annually to a journalist or journalists whose work during the
preceding calendar year has brought to public attention a topic
of
international importance. Support for this prize is provided by
an
unrestricted grant from Novartis Ltd. in recognition of the
growing importance of journalism in international affairs.
The SAIS-Novartis Prize is a U.S. $15,000 award.
Eligibility
Applicants: Any professional journalist is eligible to apply without regard to
nationality or place
of residence. Although teams of journalists will be considered, news organizations as
such are
ineligible.
Medium: Work appearing in any medium print -- audio, or video -- is eligible, but must
have
been printed or aired during the preceding calendar year. Thus, eligibility for the
award is
restricted to work appearing between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.
(For
example, the 1998 SAIS-Novartis Prize is awarded in May 1999 for work printed or aired
between January 1 and December 31 of 1998.) Video submissions should be in American
system format (NTSC-VHS). Materials must be as originally aired or printed. Books are
not
eligible.
Language: Work is eligible without regard to the language in which it first appeared.
However, nominated work that originally appeared in a language other than English
must be accompanied by an English translation or script.
Method of Selection
The winner of The SAIS-Novartis Prize is selected by a seven-member international jury
of
distinguished journalists and public policy experts.
Presentation
The winner of the 1998 SAIS-Novartis Prize will be announced on March 31, 1999. The
prize
will be presented at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)
of
The Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC in May 1999. The recipient is expected
to
attend the event and all travel expenses will be paid.
Application Procedure
Submit applications for the 1998 SAIS-Novartis Prize to the program coordinator at the
address
listed below. Submissions must be accompanied by two clearly labeled copies of the
nominated
work (photocopy, audio cassette, or videotape). Multiple submissions are permitted,
but use a
separate entry form for each. Clearly identify tapes and other supporting materials.
Entries will
not be returned. There is no entry fee. If you wish to receive confirmation that your
entry has
been received, please include a self-addressed postcard or envelope.
Submissions must be postmarked by January 31, 1999
