Indonesia Separatist Attack Kills 4
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Soldiers found the body of a fourth
worker killed in a separatist attack in Indonesia's easternmost
province of Irian Jaya, the official news agency reported Friday.
More than 100 separatists attacked workers on a plantation in
the Arso district, near the provincial capital of Jayapura, on
Wednesday. Eleven people were kidnapped and three also wounded.
The Antara news agency reported that the body of the fourth
victim, identified as Edi Prayitno, was found Thursday.
Indonesia took over Irian Jaya, a region in the western part of
the island of New Guinea, from Dutch colonizers in 1963 and its
sovereignty was formalized in 1969 through a U.N.-supervised ballot
that favored incorporation with Indonesia, also a former Dutch
colony.
A small group of rebels calling itself the Free Papua Movement
has been fighting for independence since the late 1970s.
