[kvpnc] aborts after 60 seconds (some pre-set time in the
settings). In the mean time, no connection to the network for which the
VPN is meant can be made, so I conclude that there is a problem with the
connection not related to getting an ip-address.
When comparing the output of "ip route" and "ip addr" (I use iproute2),
the only difference I see is the mtu setting: 1390 for the kvpnc setup
versus 1412 for the standard vpnc setup. Can this be the origin of my
troubles? How can I change the mtu setting in kvpnc?

Normally not. Can you try current cvs? It has some fixes. A nother reason
could be the failiture of connection status check. Try to disable that.
Mtu setting for vpnc is not implemented yet but I'll set it on todo list.
Thank you for your quick response, Christoph.
I disabled the connection status check, but that did not help.
Trying cvs is somewhat inconvenient. I prefer using Gentoo ebuilds.
However, if I find the time to build from cvs, I'll certainly report back.
Thank you for your work on this nice program,
Erik
