If you look in the log (or is it debug?) window of kvpnc you will see the command that you need to issue for connection. It would be interesting to see if you can manually launch it and it would work.
FWIW, I used vpnc 4.0 to a set of concentrators and it worked fine so I think that should work. If I remember it was 3.3 that was the issue, again this being from memory... Keep us updated.
