Bob:

If you are getting anything through at all, the speed is probably correct,
but other serial parameters may have to be adjusted.

In the process of upgrading or initially installing, one resets the KX-TD.
This changes the serial port configurations back to default. From memory
(manuals elsewhere) the KX-TD defaults are:

        Speed 9600 BPS
        Wordlength 8 bits
        parity Odd/Even/Space?
        stop bits 1
        Newline CR
        handshaking hardware

With these settings, I believe that the UART sends and expects to receive 1
start bit, 8 data bits, 1 parity bit, and 1 stop bit. If one wants 8 bits =
(data bits + parity bits), I believe that one must set the wordlength to 7
bits when one has parity <> None. Some serial configurations sometimes use
2 stop bits with 7 data bits to achieve Mark parity.

Most printers will want:
Speed must match. 9600 BPS for first trials, 19.2 KBPS
after things work (if your printer is really that fast)
Wordlength 8 bits good choice for parity = none
parity None good choice for wordlength = 8 bits
stop bits 1 good choice for speeds > 300 BPS
Newline CR/LF unless the printer is configured to supply
LF after CR
        Handshaking CTS/DSR

Anecdotal reports on this list and elsewhere suggest that configuration
software seems to be more forgiving when downloading from the KX-TD than
the KX-TD is when receiving data from the configuration software. The
KX-TVS is even more forgiving in both directions.

If someone adjusted the KX-TD serial port parameters to match the SMDR
printer, the configuration software might not work unless its parameters
are changed too.

So you might have most of the parameters correct, and need to check some of
the others. Also, one must be careful with the serial wiring. I had
problems routing the serial connection through a 3 m CAT-5 4-pair jumper +
20 m long 4-pair CAT-5 in wall + 4 m long 8-conductor satin jumper. The
problems went away when I replaced the 8-conductor satin jumper with a
CAT-5 jumper. Go figure!

Two different customer situations.
1. KX-TD1232-3 with KX-T197 internal modem card. After original
installation, was able to communicate using Progamator with no problem.
Now, when I connect, I can read PBX, but when I make a change, and send to
PBX I get a box: Error in Cmd. D0 00 C3 00 00 00 00 00 FF
I can not send the corrections to the 1232.. If I attach a laptop directly
to the RS232 port, it works fine.

2. Same error trying to communicate with a 1232-4 that has a KX-T196 card.
with this latter unit, I have previously communicated using an external
Hayes 1200 modem. Now this gives a similar error.
3. Lastly, not sure if related. on the -3 unit, the SMDR printer won't
log. any thoughts. It used to work.

Thanks.
