Serial over 50 feet is absolutely no problem if you want to run rs232 over it. if you want to make your own cable, try this link - www.arcelect.com/rs232.htm. you will need to make a null modem cable.
if your question is about running the serial connection over a lan, that's possible but more complex. email me if you want info on that (I'm doing it, it works though not with out issues). The cool thing about this is you can access your system from any PC on the LAN.
