I can tell you that on a dual cabinet, you can use
serial port (master) or serial port (slave) for
smdr(default) or programming (blink a lead and send
CR).
 
Either one will work, just the same as the other. 
This bailed us out of a big crunch when the master
serial port locked up.  (You know the drill, a few
hours of port 01 "patching", and no back up!)  The
slave port started sending smdr when we moved the
laptop cable from the master...  and starting the tool
showed that it was connected... and worked fine.
 
I never pulled a second laptop to test what happens
when a cord is connected to the slave, while the
master is still connected.  Will be backing up a dual
this weekend, I'll try that, since that system has a
pc capturing smdr on the master all the time.
