Yes, this seams pretty common on the newer KX-TVS50 and KX-TVS110 units.  I 
think they changed something on the RS232 ports in these units.  We never had 
any communication problems with the older KX-TVS75 and 100 units but recently 
have noticed difficulty communicating.  Usually rocking the power on the unit 
(pull the plug on the 50) will fix it.

We have found that sometimes it helps to disable the 16550 UART on the laptop 
or PC for more consistent communication.
