As I pointed out to David in another email, while a web-based reporting tool
is desirable, as a commercial product you take a software package that is
already targeted at a fairly small market and then you have to start making
decisions which further limit that market.

Such as: In what language do you develop the web interface? If you choose a
compiled language you either choose a single environment (Windows, Linux,
MAC, etc.) or else you give yourself a lot of work to do for a product with a
small potential market. A web targeted template-based language like PHP can
be run on most platforms, but you begin to place some technical requirements
on the customer, such as being able to install the PHP interpreter. Then
there are questions of what database to use (with similar environment
questions) and whether or not you build and distribute your own COM port
monitoring software.
