Hi Joe,

If you are hooking it up as a "matching" extension, i.e. your desk phone is
104 and the answering machine is also 104 (it can be a different extension
number through programming) then you also need to enable "parallel ringing"
on the ext 104.
Press intercom and dial 391, that will allow the second jack to ring
properly.

You may have already done that, since it seems that it works sometimes for
you. Another problem could be an intermittent connection somewhere along the
line. The analog port uses the middle pair of the jack, that would be the
red and green wires, or blue and white wire (depending on the type of wire
you use).

The other problem, not hanging up, is common. If it actually recording the
"please hang up" message from the phone company, then the system has not
detected the "hang up signal" that the phone company usually sends at the
end of a call. It is sometimes called CPC (Calling Pary Control). You might
have luck asking if the phone company is sending the cpc or hang up signal
on your line. If they are, then it might be slightly misadjusted. There
are changes in the TD1232 that can affect it, and there is a way to test the
line to be sure the phone company tells you the right story. You may need
some help for that.

If the answering machine is just recording the busy-type tone at the end of
the message, that may be coming from the phone system itself. That is a
different problem. Some answering machines are much better than others at
detecting when the call is finished. I know there are some panasonic
answering machines that work well, but . You may have to get a new answering
machine to solve that problem.

One problem is if the phone system has not hung up (and thus keeps the ans.
machine on), the other problem is that the phone system is ok but the
answering machine still has not hung up.

There is a good guy on this list who lives somewhere out there in LI.
Joseph Torn. If he doesn't respond, I can send you his email address.

Charles
