Sound to me, then, that something blew in the surge protectors that are built into the 816 circuit board. The buzz could be the result of an unbalance on the line. When you plug a phone in directly, there is not much distance to be affected, but when you add the dry pair it could make the imbalance more significant.
I'm not 100% on this, but could be. I would try reprogramming the xdp ports to use different working ports for now, and try to find a used unit on ebay.
