well, that's generally the hardest part.
However, I am not able to ping, connect, or anything to the remote host/network.
sounds like you just have a routing problem with IPs, or perhaps you just need to use the 'proxyarp' option on the pppd server on smoothwall.
Can you ping the other end of the p-t-p tunnel? if you can't do this, then perhaps it's a firewalling issue somewhere.
Also, when I disconnect the Mac from the VPN tunnel,> it seems to send something that causes the OpenSwan
IPSec service to shutdown and wipe the SmoothWall's external IP information thusly making it loose its network connection.
as in, the config gets erased? or the network device/routes just dissappear ?
