well, that's generally the hardest part.

However, I am not able to ping, connect, or anything to the remote host/network.
sounds like you just have a routing problem with IPs, or perhaps you just need to use
the 'proxyarp' option on the pppd server on smoothwall.

Can you ping the other end of the p-t-p tunnel? if you can't do this, then perhaps it's a firewalling issue somewhere.

Also, when I disconnect the Mac from the VPN tunnel,

as in, the config gets erased? or the network device/routes just dissappear ?
