Warning: you're on a GNU mailing list. ;-) Besides, I'd be glad to hear about your precise griefs against Autoconf. It turns out that before Autoconf existed, there was no generic way to look for features available on Unix-like platforms. People were either not porting their software or implementing ad hoc things. The ``Goat Book'' explains this quite well[0]. Autoconf is a good tool to help port things across Unix-like platform -- no wonder it's not that helpful when trying to port software, say, to EROS. ;-) Thanks, Ludovic.
