"The Bucket in a Closed Room" is based upon Isaac Newton's paradox "The Bucket
of Water in a Closed Room." The conclusion of Newton's thought experiment is
that no matter how hard we try, we cannot isolate ourselves from the rest of
the universe be it unseen or not wanted to be seen.
The story is told through the eyes of a Korean-born girl on the verge of
womanhood whose father is attempting to keep her "pure" from the disastrous
effects of the influence of contemporary American culture. The time is early
April 1992. The place is a Los Angeles careening towards the fires.
A mysterious black man, "Mr Johnson" appears desirous of work. Kim, a grocer
hires him as much out of his own need as that of the stranger. A relationship,
born of such, develops into a relationship. Unbeknownst to the two,
paralleling the two, are the shared destinies of their children.
