But I am sending this to you so you could know that there is a movemiento in the central valley. I invite you to Fresno anytime Debbie Reyes, OSI Fellow Ca. Prison Moratorium Project Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment Central Valley - Fresno, California 559-916-4370 With the series of civil right violations such as police brutality, police profiling, police home invasions, and proposals and plans for the mass expansion of jail cells, prison and super youth detention centers, it is past time that this community ( valley) take action and responsibility against this gross poverty producing industry. Its like a sickness that hovers over our communities. Our peoples resources for our families are unemployment, welfare, prison or the military. And, what is this attitude the police departments have up and down this valley. In Reedley, In Visalia, In Madera, Fresno and on and on. Trolling for warm bodies to fill human cages, violating our civil rights like its biz as usual. It leads one to think; are they trying to solve poverty by mass incarceration and make a case to build more cells. did I mention that we ( people of color) fill over 72% of those cages and did I also mention, that our African American brothers and sisters own 45% of that number Prison population has doubled in capacity in the past 20 years and now there is new legislation to increase the population by almost 50% ( of a current 170,000) introduced by our shining valley Ass. rep. Juan Arambula. With his bill AB1833, he hopes to create a whopping 83,000 more beds. With that being said and.. done, he hopes to create more broken families, and repel more broken kids into deep poverty Look, its time we form a valley wide coalition to take back our lives, our communities and our families I've talked to some of you and respect every one of you, we all agree its time, so now I am calling on all of you to do this... Attended the first meeting Thursday March 2, 2006 at 6pm @ Center for Non Violence 1583 N.
