Tuesday Night Forum at the Onion

Islam, which is closer to Judaism and Christianity than Judaism and
Christianity are in relation to each other has been misunderstood and
misrepresented, especially by many nations and individuals professing to being
Muslims
and representing Islam, is the topic of the April 11th forum at the Onion.
The session will begin with a two hour PBS Home Video entitled Islam:
Empire of Faith, narrated by the Academy Award winning actor Ben Kingsley
followed by a discussion regarding the dawn of Islam and the movie.
Abraham Sadegh, a resident of Reseda who attends the Onion will
facilitate the meeting. Sadegh was a member of Ayatollah Komeini’s "Welcoming
Committee" in 1979 and held high governmental positions including Deputy
Minister at
the Ministry of Islamic Guidance during Prime Minister Mahdi Bazargan’s
government following the overthrow of the Shah.
In 1983, however, he lost his position and landed in jail when he mailed
a letter of criticism to the present spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei, who was Iran’s President at the time, and posted a copy of the
letter on the bulletin board of the Center for the Intellectual Development of
Children and Young Adults founded by Farah Pahlavi.
In the letter Sadegh had criticized Ayatollah Khamenei for proclaiming
while leading the Friday prayer at the University of Tehran that the upcoming
national elections would be “The freest and the best election to warm the
heart of the Imam (Khomeini)" while on the same day security forces were
occupying and arresting the leaders of Iran’s Freedom Movement Party which was
established during the Shah’s regime and whose founder was Mahdi Bazargan –
Iran’s
first Prime Minister after the Revolution! The party was conducting a
seminar regarding the need to have free elections!
Sadegh left Iran in opposition to Iran’s intention to take over Iraq
and the rest of the Middle East and was accepted by the office of UN's High
Commissioner for Refugees in Anakara, Turkey as a political refugee and taken
to
Holland where he lived for about five years before returning (he had earlier
been in the US for pilot training) to the United States.

The Tuesday Night Forum, Sponsored by the Social Concerns Committee of
the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society, also known as the Onion, meets
on
the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The forum provides a venue for
guest speakers to discuss current social justice issues from a progressive
point of view usually not covered by the corporate media.
"The Onion," is located at 9550 Haskell Ave. in North Hills. From Los
Angeles take the 405 freeway north, exit left (westbound) on Nordhoff, go two
blocks and turn right on Haskell. It's on the right side just north of
Plummer.
