Tia Chucha's Cafe Cultural Announcement
Tia Chucha's being Displaced - Strategic Transition Plan Moving Ahead

Sylmar, Ca - Jan 08, 2007 The world-class
bookstore/café/art gallery/performance space, Tia
Chucha’s Café Cultural, and its non-profit
workshop, events and publishing center, Tia
Chucha’s Centro Cultural, are being displaced
from the Glenoaks Village strip mall after more
than five years of operating there – and
providing the Northeast San Fernando Valley with
its first bookstore and comprehensive cultural
center. Tia Chucha’s will be leaving by February 28, 2007.

Apparently some $8 million will be invested by a
high- tech laundry company to replace Tia
Chucha’s. “It’s a shame that a vital and dynamic
cultural space is being pushed out for machines,”
said Tia Chucha’s co- founder and creative
director, Luis J. Rodriguez. “This is a reminder
to the community of the nature of capitalist
enterprise where money must follow money. In
contrast, Tia Chucha’s, while organized as a
business to sell books and art, was not set up to
benefit any one person or family. Instead, the
purpose of Tia Chucha’s is to provide a positive,
cutting edge hub for community dialogue and
growth. We invested tens of thousands of my
family’s money – and others have given funds,
time, and energy – so that the community could
have a space to enhance its creative, cultural,
spiritual, political, and economic life.”
Despite this setback, Tia Chucha’s organizers
have set in motion a strategic transition plan
until a new permanent facility is found in the
Northeast San Fernando Valley. First there are
several fundraising events in 2007, starting with
Tia Chucha’s 5th Year Anniversary Celebration at
noon on February 17, 2007. The Center will also
sponsor the 2nd Annual “Celebrating Words: Written, Performed &
Sung Festival" at Sylmar Park at noon on May 19,
2007 featuring poets, theater, bands, books, and
more. And at 6 PM on July 29, 2007 there will be
a Tia Chucha’s Benefit Night at the Ford
Amphitheater in Hollywood. The goal of the
ongoing fundraisers is to raise at least $250,000
towards the establishment of a permanent facility
for Tia Chucha’s. The community is urged to
passionately support these efforts.

Immediately, Tia Chucha’s is in the process of
locating a temporary space that can house our
workshops in Aztec Dance, writing, music, Son
Jarocho musical traditions, drumming, DJing,
theater, film, art, and more. We will also
continue to organize events with speakers,
authors, artists, and others. And the publishing
poetry project, Tia Chucha Press, will still
publish two books of poetry a year; the CD
recording label, Dos Manos Records, will continue
to record and distribute; and the online Chicano
magazine, Xispas, will still be on the Internet and used in schools.

‘We are not going away,” Mr. Rodriguez insisted.
“We are transitioning to a temporary location, to
be determined soon, and are working on obtaining
a permanent space that will also expand every
aspect of our bookstore, café, art gallery,
performance space, and workshop center. The thing
to remember is that Tia Chucha’s is a spirit of
community empowerment. It’s a state of mind, not
about a particular building or site. We’ll take
this spirit throughout the community. Eventually
we’ll have our permanent site. We will never lose
the spirit, creativity, and unity nurtured at Tia
Chucha’s. We need the community more than ever.”

Tia Chucha’s expects to announce the address of
their next temporary location by their February
17th anniversary event, and will post website
updates on all move-related efforts and upcoming events.
