#5 "Bethlehem and the Separation Wall" at Cousins
Club Meeting in Irvine Tuesday, June 19th
From: Ted <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Cousins Club of Orange County
P.O. BOX 5891, ORANGE CA 92863-5891,
www.cousinscluboc.org
We meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
June 19, 2007 (3rd Tuesday)
"Bethlehem and the Separation Wall"
The city of Bethlehem is located just 4 miles south of Jerusalem"s
Old City. Historically, Bethlehem and East Jerusalem comprised
one interdependent economic/cultural unit known as "Metropolitan
East Jerusalem." Currently, this metropolitan unit is being
fragmented by Israel"s Wall and settlements, which are illegal
under international law.
Israel's Wall, a regime of concrete slabs stretching 8 meters high,
razor wire, fences, trenches, and sniper towers, is nearly complete
in the Bethlehem area. Israel is building the Wall deep within the
Bethlehem District, at one point reaching 7kms into it. Moreover,
sections of Israel's Wall slice through urban areas of the city of
Bethlehem itself.
As a result of Israel's Wall and settlements, Bethlehemites can
no longer access jobs, markets, social and religious services,
and family in East Jerusalem. Bethlehem's Christian and Muslim
population can no longer freely worship in Jerusalem's holy places,
which they had done for centuries.
From two pilgrimages that Dr. Fred Bush was privileged to lead
in the Spring of 2006 and 2007, he will give a presentation on what
has happened to Bethlehem since the Separation Wall's northern
and northeastern sections, and the "Bethlehem 300 Checkpoint/Border
Crossing," were completed in November 2005.
Dr. Fred Bush taught at Fuller Theological Seminary for 35 years
as a Professor of Ancient Near Eastern studies at Fuller Theological
Seminary an retired in 2000. He is on the steering committee of
Middle East Fellowship of California.

We meet at the Irvine Ranch Water District Offices on Sand Canyon
between the 5 freeway and the 405. Get off the 5 freeway at Sand
Canyon and go south to Waterworks Drive. Exit the 405 freeway at
Sand Canyon and go north to Waterworks Drive.
We would appreciate your donation of $10 for 2007.

Signs Provided, All are Welcome!
Our purpose is to bring attention that peace is possible
in Iraq through a comprehensive exit strategy.
We call on Congress, http://www.congress.org, to
establish a concrete and rapid timetable for an end
to the US war in Iraq for a peace process designed
to create the conditions for security, reconstruction,
and reconciliation. This plan must include:
Establishment of an Iraqi-led international peace
process to create a roadmap to peace and security,
Bringing US troops home,
Closure of the US bases in Iraq,
Reconstruction and reconciliation in Iraq , and
Creation of a peace dividend by diverting funding for
war to meeting human needs at home and abroad.
Call the White House to let President Bush of this
alternative proposal to escalation of troops in Iraq,

#6 Every Sunday evening in Huntington Beach:
"Peace vigil every Sunday night at the foot of the
Huntington Beach Pier, 7-8 pm
It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace.
We are a very small group of people who believe that
this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once
enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the
pier every Sunday night with a sign that says:
"Visualize World Peace. It's up to you".
We also believe in non-violence both physically
and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and
non-violence with anyone who is rational and
smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil
in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try
to build bridges with those who don't share our
philosophy.
Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our
banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)
