This new book is urgently needed today to equip teachers, parents, students, and people who stand for equality in their fight against No Child Left Behind mandates, the grinding drive toward standardization and high-stakes tests, and the efforts- especially here in Los Angeles- to pry open the education 'market' and privatize the futures of our children. Letters to a Young Teacher is a reflection on a lifetime of struggle for the idea that every child has the right to equal, integrated, quality education full of aesthetic merriment. We need a new civil rights movement, the author argues, to defend these ideas from the attacks that they are facing.
