Hello All:

I had a very disturbing conversation with Rev. Alexia Salvatierra, the
ED of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, this afternoon.
As many of you know, CLUE is active in the sanctuary movement and is
working with several churches, including the United Church of Christ
congregation in Simi Valley. The UCC congregation is experiencing
vitriolic and hate-filled attacks by the Klu Klux Klan and the
Minutemen because they are sheltering an undocumented family. The
Klan and Minutemen assemble outside the Church during the worship
services and, using bull horns, shout expletives and hate speech at
the congregants. The police are there and keep them a certain
distance away, but the bull horns are very powerful. Apparently, Simi
does not have a noise ordnance. Dealing with this hatred is
overwhelming for the congregation and for the mother and child they
are providing sanctuary to.

It appears that the Klan and the Minutemen are planning a similar
campaign against San Pablo Lutheran Church in North Hollywood this
Sunday--so this will now be taking place in our own backyard. CLUE is
strategizing a proactive, nonviolent response to the hatred directed
by these groups--Alexia will let us know more as their ideas develop.

Whatever our own personal feelings are about immigration reform and
the sanctuary movement, once the Klan is engaged, we are not dealing
with political differences, we are dealing with racism and religious
intolerance.

I would like to request time on the next meeting agenda of the IRC and
the Social Concerns Committees so we can talk about appropriate ways
that VIC might consider responding to this hatred and religious
intolerance.

In the meantime, if you would like to personal action to support the
UCC Congregation in Simi Valley, Alexia suggested that you might make
phone calls as individuals to Rev. June Goudey and the UCC in Simi
Valley to express your feelings about the situation. The telephone
number is 805-526-6001 and their website, where you can read about why
they have supported the sanctuary movement, is
http://www.uccsimi.org/home.asp.

In peace,

Cambria
