My Short Report from 2/9-10 Protest RNC Organizing Meeting at Minneapolis, MN Lee Siu Hin National coordinator National Immigrant Solidarity Network Over 100 activists from across the country and diverse backgrounds, (instead of going to Florida) beating the freezing negative 16 degrees weather, came to attend the first Sept 1st RNC protest organizing meeting, host by Coalition to March the RNC and Stop the War (_http://protestrnc2008.org_ (http://protestrnc2008.org/) ). The Republican National Convention will be held September 1-4 at Minneapolis-St Paul, MN. The coalition is calling for massive September 1st antiwar protest against the opening day of the RNC convention (with other marches/actions organized by different organizations at different days). The demand: “U.S. out of Iraq Now! Money for human needs, not for war! Say no to the Republican Agenda! Demand peace, justice and equality!” Several dozen organizations, includes: Anti-War Committee, AFSCME Local 3800, Students for a Democratic Society, United for peace & Justice, Teamsters Union Local 73, Arab American Action Network, International Action Center, International ANSWER, Welfare Rights Committee, Veterans for Peace, Women Against Military Madness and our organization spend two days to discuss and share ideas how to organize the march. The purpose of the meeting includes: To promote “Principles of Unity” called by the Coalition to March the RNC and Stop the War: (1) Our solidarity will be based on respect for diversity of tactics and the plans of other groups. (2) The actions and tactics used will be organized to maintain a separation of time and space. (3) Any debates or criticisms will stay internal to the movement, avoiding any public or media denunciations of fellow activists and events. (4) We oppose any state repression of dissent, including surveillance, infiltration, disruption and violence. We agree not to assist law enforcement actions against activists and others. [Source: Coalition to March the RNC and Stop the War] Second, to setting up an organizational structure that would allow organizations from around the country to participate. Third, exchange idea and information on how to organize September 1st march, such as: program and rally, logistics, security, fund raising, planning contingent and feeder marches. In addition, some other actions/marches called by different groups at the conference for different days include: - “Crash the Convention” direct actions against RNC Convention, called by RNC Welcoming Committee (_http://www.rncwelcomingcommittee.org_ (http://www.rncwelcomingcommittee.org/) ) - September 2nd Poor People’s March, called by Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (_http://www.economichumanrights.org_ (http://www.economichumanrights.org/) ) - September 4th “No Peace for the War-Markers!
