What Is The WAR TAX ALTERNATIVE FUND ?
The Southern California War Tax Alternative Fund (SCWTAF) is made up
of money not paid as taxes by people who have not paid part or all of
federal income and/or telephone excise taxes as an expression of
opposition to payment for war and a desire to redirect spending
towards peace and social needs. The Alternative Fund serves in the
following ways:
A Holding Account for Unpaid Taxes: The money may be recovered from
the Fund by the war tax refuser if she/he experiences a wage, fund,
or property seizure by the Internal Revenue Service or for any other reason.
Distribution of Interest on the SCWTAF: Depositors make a positive
statement that we favor funding real human needs and refuse to
support warfare and destruction, by donating the interest generated
by the Fund to groups and programs serving peace and human
needs. SCWTAF is held in banks serving underfunded communities.
Grantees are selected by Fund depositors.
Confirmation of Sincerity: Many Fund members inform the public
and/or the IRS that they are willing to pay their refused tax money
to constructive purposes, but not to war or preparation for war. For
them, depositing the "war tax" in the Alternative Fund demonstrates
that they are motivated by a conscientious opposition to war, and are
engaged in war tax resistance, not tax avoidance.
The WTAF is under the direction of its
member-depositors. Participation in the Fund is an ongoing statement
of commitment to build a peaceful and just society.
The Fund was founded in 1979, and now holds $49,000 from 35 war tax
refusers. As of 2007, the Fund has granted $60,000 to local and
international projects and organizations.
