They ain't gonna send us campin' like they did my man Fred Hampton. -
lyrics from Down Rodeo, Rage Against the Machine, 2007

      Dear Friends,

After a CSPG led walk-through of the exhibition, The Revolutionary Art
of Emory Douglas, an inner city student from the Museum of Contemporary
Art's (MoCA) Apprenticeship Program readily recited the above quote from his
favorite band as he strode up to a 1969/70 poster of Fred Hampton. CSPG
provided this and dozens of Black Panther Party graphics to the exhibition
at MoCA Pacific Design Center earlier this year.

The young high school student knew the lyric but not the story of the
charismatic 21-year-old leader of the Chicago Black Panther Party who was
assassinated by the police in 1969. The student learned about Fred Hampton
that day, he also learned about the role of poster art in mobilizing against
racism, poverty, and war.

He could make this connection because for twenty years-yes, we are
celebrating our twentieth anniversary-supporters have connected with CSPG
and made our work possible. In turn, CSPG connects the public with poster
art that captures the passion and preserves the faces of those who struggle
for justice. Your help enables us to bring compelling images and stories to
young people like this high school student.

As we try to repair the social wreckage of the "conservative era," we
can draw inspiration from the numerous individuals and movements whose
visions are commemorated in the posters CSPG collects. Their stories,
sacrifices and victories are told by CSPG every time the records of their
struggles are viewed online and seen in exhibitions. This is CSPG's unique
contribution to the progressive community. We are the visual memory of
struggles past and an inspirational resource for new efforts to create a
more just world.

In this period of financial challenge we ask you to be as generous
possible to help document the history that produced the posters, tell the
stories of the people in the posters, and inspire new generations to work
for social change.

      For Peace with Justice,

In conjunction with Otis College of Art & Design- Integrated Learning
Project

The Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG) is asking
artists, organizations, and activists for poster submissions for our next
exhibition, Masterpeaces: High Art for Higher Purpose. From Dada to Punk,
from anti-war movements to feminism and ecology, high art has been
repeatedly incorporated into a visual language that ranges from the
iconoclastic to overt protest. MasterPeaces will show how works by Leonardo,
Michelangelo, Munch, Ingres, Delacroix, Picasso, Lichtenstein, Warhol and
many others have been parodied, appropriated or altered to make statements
about a variety of contemporary issues including censorship, disabled
rights, ecology, HIV/AIDS, homophobia, war, and women's rights. Through
annotations it will also introduce the viewers to the historical context of
the original work, thus expanding viewers' visual literacy. Masterpeaces
will premiere June 2009 in Los Angeles. Your posters will impact and educate
a large audience of artists, community activists, university and high school
faculty and students.

      Submission deadline: March 20, 2009
By donating your posters, they will become a part of CSPG's unique
archive that will be accessible to the general public and researchers for
years to come.

      Criteria for Posters:

      1. Must be produced in multiples such as silkscreen, offset, stencil,
litho, digital output etc.

      2. Must have overt political content.
