Dear Peace Activists:
United for Peace and Justice calls for the immediate end to United States
military operations in Libya and to the Libyan government's use of violence
to brutally repress peaceful protest. We call for negotiations aimed at
ending the fighting and realizing the rights of the Libyan people to chart
their own destiny free of U.S./Western influence and internal repression.
Already embroiled in an eight year occupation in Iraq and an ongoing war
in Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, U.S. motives for
intervention in Libya are highly questionable.
The inspirational and breath taking peoples’ movements sweeping parts of
the Middle East and North Africa are undeniable expressions of the human
desire for freedom. Inspired by the movements in Tunisia and Egypt, tens of
thousands of Libyans took to the streets to protest against what they see as
a repressive government. The Libyan government’s choice to use violence
against citizens who gather in peaceful protest is a denial of human rights.
And the state-orchestrated use of lethal private, police and military force
destroys the Libyan government’s legitimacy. It has flamed protest and
provoked defensive violence.
Both the Libyan government and the U.S. led coalition hold full
responsibility for the violence and civilian deaths that will occur in this
conflict.
The actions of both parties will lead to a prolonging of death and
suffering. There must be an immediate end of violent hostilities for the sake
of
the people of Libya.
We demand that the U.S. government respect the peoples’ movements in
Syria, Bahrain, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The people there are also facing
repressive violence against peaceful protest. Military operations against
Libya
with little diplomatic or public pressure on other nations engaged in similar
acts of repression, is hypocritical at best.
To truly support the self-determination of these popular movements the
Obama Administration must:
* Cease all military action against Libya.
* Respect International Law and human rights
* As the world’s leading weapons dealer, the U.S. should halt all
military aid and arms sales. These weapons help fuel the destructive power
and death tolls in many conflicts around the world. The same weapons at
times are used against U.S. troops.
* End covert CIA operations
