Sent: Friday, May 13, 2011 4:25 PM Subject: Please Endorse the Human Right to Housing for ALL
One week left until LA's Human Right to Housing Day!! Join the Los Angeles Human Right to Housing Collective on Friday, May 20th 9:00 AM Los Angeles City Hall (South Lawn, near the corner of 1st and Main) In just one short week, LA tenants and housing advocates from across the city will hit City Hall to proclaim our Human Right to Housing. We will raise our collective voices and demand that the human right to housing be recognized and protected in Los Angeles, including rent stabilization reform, protecting public housing, guaranteeing the rights to tenant participation and decision-making, ending homelessness, and more! We will also speak out against the abuse and criminalization of tenants that occurred one year ago - those who were solely fighting for a temporary rent freeze in the midst of economic crisis. All of your voices are needed in this fight. What's that you say? You can't make it? Please Endorse the Solidarity Letter!!! We have been adamant in asking for your presence on May 20th, but realize that many of you may have restrictions on your schedule. That is why we are asking for you to join us, if not in person, in solidarity, in proclaiming to the Los Angeles City Council that you believe in the human right to housing for everyone. Your voice is important. Please sign on to the attached solidarity letter by Thursday, May 19th. Thanks for all your support! --LA Human Right to Housing Collective Solidarity Statement LA Human Right to Housing Collective April 2011 I support the LA Human Right to Housing Collective and their efforts to promote and defend human rights. Our government and elected officials have the responsibility to protect and uphold the Human Right to Housing. The LA City Council, the City and County Housing Authorities, and other public decision makers must act immediately to strengthen and protect housing rights for all residents of Los Angeles. I support reforming the City's Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO). I urge the City Council to remove any minimum rent increase. I also urge the City to reduce additional rent pass-throughs and fees to tenants and develop an improved standard for repairs that preserves and maintains LA's housing stock in decent safe and sanitary conditions. May 20th marks the last day that RSO reforms can be passed for the coming fiscal year. It is also the first anniversary of the City Council's failure to pass a rent freeze and their decision to allow police officers to beat and threaten the tenants that challenged them to uphold the human right to housing. Without action this spring, rents will again increase for tenants on July 1st in the midst of continued economic crisis. I also support the preservation and improvement of LA's public housing stock and the appointment of a new Board of Commissioners who believe in truly protecting the tenants and their housing. I urge City and County leaders to keep public housing as a publicly-owned resource and at the same time work with public housing tenants to increase resources to improve their communities.
