On December 22, 2011, the Southern California Immigration Coalition held a press conference to do a shout out to our community to have a happy and safe holiday season. We also told people to be aware of the increase in police checkpoints especially in Black and Chicano/Mexican communities, that target our community for tickets, arrests and car impounds. We talked about the threat of the police/ICE attack using the "Secure Communities" ICE program to detain and deport our people.
See links below. We announced our support for the change in'"procedure" by the LAPD Chief C. Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigoza where at traffic stops an unlicensed driver will be given reasonable time to call a licensed driver to avoid the car impound. Per Chief Beck this new "procedure' will go into effect some time in January of 2012, needless to say we want it now! We also addressed the issue of the pedestrian killed in Pacoima last week by an unlicensed driver. We regret this very unfortunate death, but the driver stopped to cooperate was not arrested or charged with anything serious other than a ticket of driving without a license, as the pedestrian had not used a corner or cross walk but in the dark tried to cross in an unmarked area in the middle of a block. We said that the Police Protective League is using this unfortunate death to whip up racist emotional hysteria against undocumented people and attack our years of work as SCIC. We called for unity, more organizing work, and perseverance in our Chicano/Mexican and Central American community in our long fight for full legalization for all! We invite you and all to our next SCIC open and public meeting, all who want to work are welcomed, on January 8, Sunday, at 9 AM at Centro Francisco Villa at 2100 South Maple Avenue, LA, off Washington Blvd. We will be uniting and planning our ongoing grassroots organzing work for another year of struggle in 2012.
