3/9: Join the UFPJ Iran Pledge of Resistance Campaign!
At the UFPJ Occupy Peace Summit in Philadelphia, an exciting campaign was
conceived to build an effective and rapid response to preempt a U.S. war
with Iran. Below is a draft proposal for the Iran Pledge of Resistance
(IPOR) campaign; getting your input is the next step.
We are organizing an IPOR conference call for groups to discuss and learn
more next Wednesday, March 13th at 3:00 PM EST with the goal of launching
this online on March 19th.
This proposal, modeled after the Central American Pledge of Resistance
that successfully prevented a US invasion in Nicaragua, has the potential to
build an emergency response network and a campaign capable or preventing a
new war as we fight for justice at home.
This proposal is not set in stone, but we do need to move quickly. Are
you and/or your organization interested in joining and helping to move this
exciting and timely campaign?

A Proposal for an Iran Pledge of Resistance
Background:
In the 1980’s, the Central American Pledge of Resistance (POR) created a
widespread coordinated horizontal movement that was successful in preventing
an all-out U.S. war in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Using affinity groups,
spokes councils, and local and national coordination structures, this
movement model is especially apt for this political moment and can support and
amplify the work that occupy is doing.
Inspired by the the Central American Pledge of Resistance and the Iraq
Pledge of Resistance from early in the anti-Iraq War movement, the initial
idea for an Iran Pledge of Resistance (IPOR) came out of the Occupy Peace
meeting held by United for Peace and Justice in Philadelphia February 24-26.
Building off this organizing model and using new media tools and the
structures and practices now familiar through Occupy, we believe this has the
potential to renew and rebuild a grassroots anti-war movement.

Goals of an Iran POR
● Build a diverse, grassroots movement to prevent war with Iran.
● Re-mobilize the anti-war movement and build a larger anti-war base.
● Use online and offline tools to engage the maximum number of
participants and allow a variety of levels of engagement.
● Create a horizontal national structure that supports local
organizing through creating resources, training, and materials, connecting
people
locally, and providing networking and sharing across the network.
Options for the Iran Pledge Language:
adapted from the original Central America Pledge of Resistance-
If the U.S. applies increased sanctions, invades, bombs, sends combat
troops, drones, or otherwise significantly escalates its intervention in Iran
or the region, I pledge to join with others to engage in acts of legal
protest and/or nonviolent civil disobedience as conscious leads me, at U.S.
government facilities including federal buildings, congressional offices,
offices of CIA, State Department, Homeland Security, those who promote and
profit from war, and other appropriate targets. I pledge to engage in
nonviolent
civil disobedience in order to prevent or halt the death and destruction
which U.S. military actions would cause to the people of Iran, the Middle
East, and our communities at home.

Some of the logistics and tech:
The Pledge would have both online and offline components, with the online
components supporting the offline organizing and being a point of entry
where people can then be moved up a ladder of engagement. The Pledge would
have it’s own website with the pledge, resources, local points of contact,
etc. The actual Pledge would be two steps: first is just the Pledge with a
place for an email address and zip code. This would then redirect them to
a more thorough form where we can collect more information, such as what
type of actions they’re willing to take (legal and/or civil disobedience),
if they’re already part of a local group or affinity group, willing to be a
local point of contact, etc. We would then have the ability to connect and
mobilize people both locally and online. The primary purpose of collecting
pledge names centrally is to facilitate connecting people locally, and we
can easily work out systems so that organizations driving people to the
pledge will be able to retain the pledge names acquired from the links they
send out.
Structure:
● Affinity Groups: both already formed local groups and we can connect
people locally to form affinity groups
● Local and Regional Spokes councils: this will clearly need to be a
gradual build up that might look very different depending on the city or
region
● Local Coordinating Group made up of staffers from participating
organizations and empowered spokespeople from local affinity groups
● National coordinating body: initially composed of spokes from
national organizations and local organizations wanting to serve as local
coordinators for their city or region, this could involve a variety of working
groups to do things like research and materials production, media and
communications, and a “signal” group to call for coordinated days of action or
emergency response actions.
● Online Action Team: composed of individuals who sign the pledge and
take actions online, this is would be the largest body and where everyone
who signs the pledge online would start
What could this actually look like?

Days of Training at local level with online trainings and efforts to
connect people locally

Education and visibility actions: either triggered by events or on
coordinated days, distributing fact sheets, creative newspaper inserts with
facts
about Iran, email and tweet mass corrections to newspapers who skew the
facts, wheat pasting, speaking to congregations and schools, cultural and
arts-based events exposing people to Iranian culture, etc

Demonstrations and protests: either triggered by events or on coordinated
days, these could be vigils, demonstrations, street theater, marches,
contacting congress, etc

Creative Nonviolent Direct Action targeting those promoting and profiting
from war
