Seeking justice for the Comfort Women victims In 2007, US Congress unanimously passed the historic HR 121, demanding Japanese government to take formal responsibility for the systematic sexual slavery it institutionalized against 200,000 young women from 1932 until the end of WWII. The government of Japan has not formally issued a formal apology yet. In Korea, surviving victims of the Forced Sexual Slavery started their weekly protest in front of Japanese Embassy in Seoul since 1992, marking 1,000th protest as of December of 2011. Only 61 of the Korean Grandmas (now in their late 80s) who reported of the abuse are alive today. Monuments and statues to memorialize Comfort Women have been being erected in Japan, Korea and the US. These are part of the endeavor of humanity to end violence against young women in parts of the world where war and military aggression exist today, and to continue to raise awareness about violence against women abroad and at home, here in the United States. We have organized two exhibits in honor of the Grandmas and a fundraiser event with the support of the City of Glendale to build monument(s) to memorialize Comfort Women in Southern California. Art Exhibit Cry of the Grandmas July 23 (Mon) ~ July 28 (Sat), 11am - 6pm (Opening reception will be held at 6pm - Donation welcome.) Gallery Western 210 N. Western Ave. #201 Los Angeles, CA 90004 The subject of Steve Cavallo's paintings is the Grandmas (Comfort Women) and their unconscionable suffering from the past human rights abuses. Tears shed by the Grandmas in silence, their cry in darkness of denial by those responsible, the powerful cry for just from the weak and vulnerable, and the cruelty of passing of time, are all masterfully captured by both bold and subtle colors, shades and lines of Cavallo's paintings to invoke the most powerful emotions. Select drawings by Grandmas, also in display, are explosive revelations that can only come from the naked truth of the direct experiences of trauma from the tender ages trampled. Ms. Kim Young Hui's photos capture the faces of Grandmas and all the years' stories in their deep facial lines and unfading eyes of sorrow and rage. Educational Exhibit at Glendale Central Library July 23 (Mon) - Aug 3 (Fri) Mon - Thur: 10am - 8pm Fri - Sat: 10am - 6pm, Sun: 1pm - 6pm Glendale Central Library 222 E. Harvard St. Glendale, CA 91205 Grandmas' paintings and historic photo records will be displayed. Admission is free. Wednesday Protest July 25 (Wed) at 1pm Japanese Consulate of Los Angeles 350 South Grand Ave. One of the surviving Grandma, Ms. Bok-dong Kim(86), who is visiting from Korea has protested continuously for more than 1,000 times in front of Japanese Embassy in Seoul, Korea. She has never missed a single protest held every Wednesday for the past 20 years. She will continue her courageous struggle during her visit to the US and she invites all peace-loving friends as she pays her weekly visit to confront the government of Japan. 5th Anniversary for HR121 and a fundraiser event July 30, 2012 (Mon) 6:30pm Glendale Central Library Auditorium 222 E. Harvard St. Glendale, CA 91205 This event is to hear the testimony of a surviving Grandma who will speak about her ordeal as a forced sex slave for the Japanese Imperial Army and her powerful legacy of courageous struggle to seek justice. (Translation will be provided) Your generous contribution will support the efforts in the US and Korea to help Grandmas continue their just struggle.
