Sent from Ross Altman: [email protected] Dear Progressive Friends,
Our friend John Johnson, editor & publisher of Change-Links & former SDS organizer, is in the ICU at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, 15107 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys 91405 - Phone (818) 782-6600. He has been there since last Tuesday, when he came in with severe shortness of breath. They took off a substantial amount of fluid from his lungs two days ago. He has been diagnosed with a faulty heart valve and clogging of at least one and perhaps two major arteries. He is on oxygen. He is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery Monday morning at 8:30 AM to repair the valve and clear the arteries. At this point I do not know if a bypass is also called for. I saw John last night and asked him if I could share what he has been going through with the progressive community and he said sure. He is able to talk and enjoyed having company. He was in good spirits, though well aware of the medical enormity of what he is facing and the risks involved. He also said that he would wake up in one of two places; in the recovery room, or in a different room--with Joe Hill and Big Bill Haywood and a number of other departed friends. So either way, he would be OK. John is in room 111 of the ICU; the hospital is located just east of Sepulveda Blvd on Van Owen. I will be visiting again tomorrow, Sunday, January 6. As you know, Change-Links did not publish a January 2013 issue, or even post the calendar on-line. In his typical discrete fashion, John's web site simply said he had "health issues." Well, now you know what they are. I told John I would have all the atheists in town praying for him, and that got a smile out of him. Feel free to post this to your own mailing lists. And if anyone wishes to communicate with John via email please reply to this email and I will print it out and bring it over to the hospital. You may also send good wishes to his own email address: <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected] I checked with the nursing station before I left for hospital visiting hours in ICU. They are 24 hours with the following two exceptions: 7:00 to 7:30 AM and 7:00 to 7:30 PM, when they change shifts. Visiting is also permitted after John's surgery, limited of course by when he may be asleep in recovery.
