Hi all: I am really very impressed to find John with such positive spirit I
just spoke with him over the phone. I told him that I will visit him
tomorrow Monday Jan .7 before his surgery which he said could be between
noon and 5:00 P.M. Of course it is important that John's comrades be
around him at this moment when he need of our entire support and encouragement.
John has been a wonderful companhero to all people's struggles and liberation.
I am very grateful of the calendar notes he published in Change Links for the
"Late Amnesty Movement in Action" when we the immigrants were fighting for
justice which was finally achieved. Also, the calendar event notes posted in
the paper about the Venezuelan revolution. God bless John and get him soon
through recovery. Oly Mogollon (Venezuelan immigrant)

Dear Progressive Friends,

Our friend John Johnson, editor & publisher of Change-Links & former SDS
organizer, is in the ICU at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, 15107 Vanowen
Street, Van Nuys 91405 - Phone (818) 782-6600.

He has been there since last Tuesday, when he came in with severe shortness
of breath. They took off a substantial amount of fluid from his lungs two
days ago. He has been diagnosed with a faulty heart valve and clogging of at
least one and perhaps two major arteries. He is on oxygen.

He is scheduled to undergo open heart surgery Monday morning at 8:30 AM to
repair the valve and clear the arteries. At this point I do not know if a
bypass is also called for.

I saw John last night and asked him if I could share what he has been going
through with the progressive community and he said sure. He is able to talk
and enjoyed having company.

He was in good spirits, though well aware of the medical enormity of what he
is facing and the risks involved.

He also said that he would wake up in one of two places; in the recovery
room, or in a different room--with Joe Hill and Big Bill Haywood and a
number of other departed friends. So either way, he would be OK.

John is in room 111 of the ICU; the hospital is located just east of
Sepulveda Blvd on Van Owen.

I will be visiting again tomorrow, Sunday, January 6.

As you know, Change-Links did not publish a January 2013 issue, or even post
the calendar on-line. In his typical discrete fashion, John's web site
simply said he had "health issues." Well, now you know what they are.

I told John I would have all the atheists in town praying for him, and that
got a smile out of him.

Feel free to post this to your own mailing lists. And if anyone wishes to
communicate with John via email please reply to this email and I will print
it out and bring it over to the hospital. You may also send good wishes to
his own email address: cha...@pacbell.net> cha...@pacbell.net

I checked with the nursing station before I left for hospital visiting hours
in ICU. They are 24 hours with the following two exceptions: 7:00 to 7:30 AM
and 7:00 to 7:30 PM, when they change shifts. Visiting is also permitted
after John's surgery, limited of course by when he may be asleep in
recovery.

Keep a Good Thought for John,

Ross Altman: greygoosemu...@aol.com
